7 July (Saturday), demolition day

Today we demolished a building Wellingtone bought next to the Anajali School.   It was very interesting to see the construction of the mud hut we demolished since we did it in stages.  Many of the residences in Kibera slum look like this hut.  At times very scary to be up on the corrugated tin roof taking nails out so we could keep the nails and the tin.  Only the mud wasn't being saved.  Even the sticks and poles that were used for construction were saved.  The most time consuming task was removing nails since we only had one crowbar and two hammers and one was often needed elsewhere.  We will have photos of the process soon.

Wellingtone bought us lots of soda and water and chicken and french fries for lunch.  It was a welcome addition to the sandwiches, banana and water we brought.  It was hot, sweaty work so we went through lots of liquid before the afternoon was over.

The tin from the roof and the branches from the framework were all piled up in one place.  Some of the tin was used to block off the outer side of the building facing the slum.  Otherwise, slum residents would have come in at night and taken many things.  In addition to the "wall" around the school, there are two watch dogs in the school that are let loose at night.

Needless to say, we were very dirty!  We have some photos of how dirty we got.  You will laugh when you see us.  You will think we were Kibera slum residents!  It's a good thing we are friends otherwise there would have been a fight for the showers.  As it was, the two couples got to shower together to help one another get clean.  I pity the single people here.  They won't be clean until they get back home.  ;-)

Tea was liquid refreshment, water, soda and some had hot tea.  Most of us just drunk lots of water and soda.

Supper was rice, mashed potatoes, meat, and githeri (a dish of corn and beans).  The corn is hard and the beans are soft making an interesting contast in the mouth and on the palate.

Elizabeth led devotionals.

Later in the evening the tailor returned with our clothes that he made for us.  Unfortunately, none of the photos we took could capture Emily's joy at getting her new dress.  Chris and I looked rather stunning if you don't mind my saying so.

Chris with the wet one used to clean her hands for lunch.  We did get dirty today!
Elizabeth, Lisa, Haily, and Christopher at lunch.  Yes, we do look beat!  Looks are NOT deceiving in this case.
The two guard dogs that are let loose at night. The ditch at the bottom right of the picture is where I took the water sample from for the microscope described under the 3rd of July.
Supper.  It was sooo good.

All of us in our new garb.  Elizabeth, Carl, Chris, Hannah, Emily, Anne, Malaina, Haily and the tailor, David.
